The Ultimate Reveal

Presents an intimate and nuanced look into the lives of six female burlesque performers. This comprehensive project encompasses a series of evocative photographs coupled with in-depth interviews, delving into the personal journeys and creative inspirations of these artists.

At the heart of this study lies an exploration of the unique motivations and passions that drive each performer. The project seeks to understand how these individual impulses are intricately woven into their striptease choreographies, and further, how these elements manifest in their daily lives.

Highlighting the diversity of backgrounds and influences, the project features distinct narratives. For instance, Venus De Mille, who by day serves as the head tailor for the L.A. Opera, infuses her deep-seated love for theatre into her mesmerizing performances by night. Penny Starr Jr., inspired by her lineage as the granddaughter of a renowned 1950's burlesque performer and influenced by her own directorial work on 'The Velvet Hammer Burlesque' documentary, embraces the art form with a unique perspective. Meanwhile, Diamondback Annie, raised in a Mormon household, crafts performances that draw intriguing parallels between secular and religious devotion.

The term “ultimate reveal” in burlesque, traditionally denoting the final act of unveiling in a performance, is redefined in this project. It symbolizes the deeper, more intimate revelations that are subtly expressed through seemingly simple acts—be it the lowering of sunglasses or the popping of a balloon—each gesture hinting at the profound stories and emotions that lie beneath the surface.

This series of black and white photographs span a three-year tour of popular Los Angeles venues such as The Parlour Club (Bricktops), El Rey Theatre (The Velvet Hammer Troupe), Mayan Theatre (Lucha Vavoom) in addition to the Miss Exotic World Pageant in Las Vegas and several independently produced shows at bars and clubs in Southern California.
